Our Mission
"To preserve the natural and historic elements of its environs and to enrich the lives of its residents through social and philanthropic activity".

Welcome to Hessian Camp

Hessian Camp is arguably one of the City of Reading’s finest neighborhoods. Many architecturally significant homes line the curvy, hilly streets above the Lindbergh Viaduct. Tucked into the east side of Mount Penn, the friendly community offers many recreational outlets with an abundance of woodland trails for hiking, Mountain Biking or a nature walk!  The Pagoda skyline, Egelman’s Park, historic Pendora and Mineral Spring Parks all neighbor the 12-acre residential Hessian Camp enclave.

The community is proud of its historic heritage dating back to 1781 when George Washington first sent the Hessians from the Battle of Trenton to the encampment along Hill Road and in doing so unknowingly created our community’s namesake “Hessian Camp”.  Where, through to the 20th Century, a notable congressman, well-known artist, bestselling author, famous doll maker, teachers, doctors, lawyers, and industrialists all called Hessian Camp home.  Today the diverse community continues to evolve and grow in positive ways with committed residents that support preserving the natural beauty of the mountainside and who also embrace the distinct architecture that makes Hessian Camp unique.

In 2017 Hessian Camp Community Council was incorporated as a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to enhance the community. It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, all who are residents within the community. The organization receives vital support from numerous volunteers and neighbors.  The Purpose of the Council was to provide a platform and voice to preserve the area’s rich history, incorporate a crime watch and host community social gatherings to bring neighbors together.
